What is X10 all about ?

X10 is a HomeAutomation system, that allows you to control lights, appliances and other equipment in your Home, by sending and receiving signals over the mains power line signals (PLC). Works on both 115VAC/60Hz and 230VAC/50Hz.

X10 allows you to control virtually everything in your Home from a remote control or from a computer. Managing all lights and equipment in your Home to provide you and your family with the ultimate in convenience, security, energy savings, luxury and a peace of mind is what X10 HomeAutomation is all about.

X10 can be used and installed by yourself. For more advanced solutions you might have to ask an electrician for help.

The signals are transmitted (by a Transmitter) onto the phase of the power lines, and in Homes using more than one phase, a   phase-coupler is required, if you want to copy the signal the other phases, alling the signal to control devices (Receivers) all over the Home. The phase-coupler also filters the signal, so it is not copied to the neighbours.

The signals can be used to control Receivers like relays and light dimmers.

The relays can turn on/off for example:
- Lamps, stereo-set, tv, coffee machine, ironing tools, water pumps, sprinklers, etc.

The light dimmers can control and adjust the light level:
- On, Off, Dim (down), Bright (up) or specific light level (for example 40%).

HOUSECODE AND ADDRESS
The X10 Receivers (relays and dimmers) are individually controlled/identified by a HouseCode and a Unit number. This normally allows you to control 16 Units (1-16) in your particular House (A-P). You set the codes on the outside of the relays and dimmers by a small screwdriver.

TECHNICAL
X10 sends 120 KHz signals onto the power lines. The signals are synchronised to the zero-crossing point of the AC power line. The Transmitter/Controller sends one bit on every phase shift. One command takes about 1 second.
